Bug-O-Nay-Ge-Shig School
RECYCLING AWARENESS

2005-2006

Mike Schmid has been focusing on recycling as a component of the 10th grade Service Learning project at Bug-O-Nay-Ge-Shig High School. Students ordered recycling containers to distribute within our school. They now gather recycled paper, cans, and plastic weekly to place in recycling bins behind our main building. These 10th grade students are learning about recycling and renewable/non-renewable resources, as well as participating in games and activities at energyhog.org to become official "Hog Busters". Along with these projects, the students work with elementary students to promote an awareness of recycling. Jodi Perrington and Ryan Jorgenson have assisted with this project through Language Arts and Environmental Science. Tenth graders hosted a school-wide "Save the Earth" poster contest. Approximately 100 students from grades K-12 entered posters in the contest. Nate Cornelius, a 10th grader, was our overall winner and his poster will be displayed on a LAMAR billboard outside of Cass Lake, Minnesota. LAMAR has been gracious enough to partner with us for two years by charging half price for the use of their billboards. This will be the second National Learn and Serve billboard in Minnesota. From the remaining posters students chose 25 posters that will be reproduced as laminated 11x17 inch posters to distribute throughout the communities and the school to raise awareness of the importance of recycling.
